Finningham will be celebrating the Jubilee by joining in the nation and worldwide lighting of a Beacon.
This will be erected on Church Green and the programme for the evening will begin with a village walk, which will start and end at the Green.
The Beacon has now been Installed (very generously manufactured and installed by Miller Farms Ltd) and ready for the ceremony on Thursday 2nd June.
If you wish to join in the walk, please be at the Green for a 7:15pm departure. The duration will be about 2 hours so, you will be back in time to see the lighting of the Beacon.
We are pleased that we shall be one of over 2000 beacons all over the UK, to be lit in honour of our Queen.
On Sunday afternoon, there will be a picnic with live music, organised by the Friend of Finningham. Bring your own picnic and something to sit on. The proceedings start at 1:00pm.
Thanks to our Footpath Warden, Doug Aiken, about 40 villagers and friends joined the walk on footpaths around the village. They returned in time to receive their free Commemorative Mug (donated by the Parish Council) and then witness the lighting of our beacon.
They were joined by about another 100 people who were entertained by the prescribed music before the actual ignition.
Unfortunately, we were unable to find live musicians so, recordings were played. These were :
The National Anthem
Song for the Commonwealth
The Suffolk Torch Procession will go going through the village on Tuesday 24th May at about 11.40am. The route will be down Gislingham Road until it reaches the T junction with Wickham Skeith Road where it will turn right and continue over the crossroads and along Westhorpe Road to the end of the village.
Everyone is encouraged to come along and support the occasion.
Unfortunately, the torch procession took a wrong turning and had to go straight through the village in an effort to make up time!
